Research Experience
Undergraduate Projects
06/2012—09/2012: Earthquake stress transfer and its influence on regional seismicity
Place: State Key Laboratory of Geodesy and Earth's Dynamics
Responsibility: Try to analysis a sequence of earthquakes that are bigger than Mw8.0 which happened in Japan
and its nearby area from 1923 to 2003, by calculating the coulomb stress change.
04/2012—04/2013: Evaluation of seismic hazard in DangXiong based on InSAR data
Place: School of Earth and Space Science, USTC
Responsibility: 1. My work is to calculate the Coulomb Stress and figure out the area where future earthquakes
is likely to be triggered.
2. Try to analysis the uncertainties in the input data, and then evaluate the reliability of calculation
and conclusion.
09/2012—06/2013: Topographic Correction for 2D SH Case and its Application Based on the GGRTM
Place: School of Earth and Space Science, USTC
Note: Undergraduate Thesis (A+)
Responsibility: 1. My work is to use GGRTM method to deduce the formula of operator to do topographic
correction (result turned out to be two possible operators).
2. Discuss how these two operators can rectify the distortion caused by topography theoretically.
3. Test these two operators by using synthetic data generated by GGRTM method, and compare
the results of two operators, which proved to be the same as discussed in the second part.
PhD Projects
2013 — 2017: Internal structure of the San Jacinto fault at Jackass Flat from data recorded by a dense
linear array
Participants: Hongrui Qiu, Yehuda Ben-Zion, Zachary E. Ross, Pieter-Ewald Share and Frank L. Vernon
Responsibility: Our work is to analyzing the seismic waves recorded on a linear dense array (JF array) with 9 broad
band instruments as follows:
1. ~ 29,000 regional earthquakes happened in San Jacinto fault zone area during 2012-2014 are
being used in this study;
2. After obtaining high quality automatic P-wave picks using the algorithm of Ross & Ben-Zion (2014),
a delay time analysis is conducted to infer the local velocity structure beneath the JF array;
3. Fault Zone Head Waves (FZHW) are being explored in the dataset. A combination of automatic
detection algorithm (Ross & Ben-Zion, 2015) and visual inspection are used to identify candidates;
4. Fault Zone Trapped waves (FZTW) are also being examined in this study. Candidates with clear
resonance mode are flagged. Parameters for fault zone structure are being inverted by doing a
genetic algorithm inversions using waveforms of the high quality FZTW candidates;
5. Finally, we combine all the results and build a conceptual fault-zone model.
2014 — 2019: Eikonal tomography of the Southern California plate boundary region
Participants: Hongrui Qiu, Yehuda Ben-Zion, and Fan-Chi Lin
Responsibility: Our work is to obtain high quality Surface wave (Rayleigh & Love waves) phase & group velocities,
Vs structure, and 2-psi & radial anisotropy for SC plate boundary region using Eikonal tomography.
2016 — 2019: Temporal changes of seismic velocities in the San Jacinto Fault zone associated with the
2016 Mw5.2 Borrego Springs earthquake
Participants: Hongrui Qiu, Gregor Hillers and Yehuda Ben-Zion
Responsibility: Our goal is to study the temporal changes of seismic velocities within a fault zone associated with a
nearby moderate earthquake using two dense linear fault zone arrays and ambient noise correlation.
2017 — present: Internal structure of the San Jacinto fault at Dry Wash from data recorded by a dense linear
array
Participants: Hongrui Qiu, Yehuda Ben-Zion and Frank L. Vernon
Responsibility: Our goal is to image the San Jacinto Fault Zone at a different location in along strike.
